Owners of the PLAYSTATION 3 edition of Epic’s latest shooter, Unreal Tournament 3, know that they were promised the ability to use mods created by the PC version, which ships with the Unreal editor for game variant creations.
The only problem as of now ( aside from the absurd method of actually getting said mods onto the PS3) is that users themselves cannot yet make PC mods speak to the console code.
Creations must be taken by Epic and "cooked" into the proper format for Sony’s console. Mark Rein, Epic’s VP, dropped a line on the company’s forums letting folks know that they are "very close" to releasing to the public the update for the engine editor next week that will allow gamers to go through this "cooking" process on their own, right on their PC.
"Folks,
I just wanted to give you an update:
We’re very close to releasing an update to the Unreal Engine 3 editor, that comes with the PC version of UT3, that will allow UT3 mod-makers to cook their mods into the required PS3 format. We’ve been doing some internal testing and we’re hoping to expand to a wider group tomorrow or Friday. If all goes well then we should see the update released next week which is what I expect will happen. Obviously the process works, as we put out a few mods before Christmas and people seem to be playing them, but it is the update to the editor that we’re testing.
Happy New Year!"
Sounds fantastic, now, all they need to fix is the fact that I can’t download and import mod’s on the PS3 using it’s internal and standard HDD. What’s up with that? Get that squared away, and the mod community is going to blow up. Can’t wait.~
