Apple announced Monday that the iTunes App Store, their digital download service for the iPhone and iPod Touch, has passed the 2 billion download mark. The milestone comes less than a year after its launch with a staggering “half a billion apps this quarter” according to Apple CEO Steve Jobs. “The App Store has reinvented what you can do with a mobile handheld device, and our users are clearly loving it.”
There are over 85,000 apps available, including about 16,000 games, making games the largest category available. There are over 20 categories to choose from including entertainment, books, travel, and lifestyle. Apple also went on to say that they have over 50 million iPhone and iPod Touch customers worldwide and over 125,000 developers in Apple’s iPhone Developer Program.
We all know that games are a big business, and it seems Apple has done a respectable job of entering into the mobile gaming arena. Should Nintendo and Sony be worried? Let us know what you think in the comments.
