The latest episode in Telltale’s The Walking Dead series maintains the quality of the past two episodes while continuing to escalate the action and situations that Lee and the rest of the survivors find themselves in.
Without going into spoilers, the main plot of Episode 3 revolves around the group finally leaving the fortress they’ve built up at the hotel. This leads to the titular “Long Road Ahead” as everyone finally moves on towards a supposedly brighter tomorrow: the city ofSavannah. Needless to say, the journey is not sunshine and rainbows as tempers flare, zombies attack and various people end up dead.
The story and characters continue to be thehigh pointof the series. Like the comic (and TV show) the story revolves less around the actual walkers and more around the relationships between people. This is further emphasized through the many choices you’ve made in previous episodes to help mold your story into something that feels exclusive to you. The voice acting is top notch and the new characters introduced are unique and interesting.
In Episode 2 the events and plot grew darker and more mature. Episode 3 continues to hold to a dark storyline but also brings along more emotion than ever before. There are several parts that rival the best you have ever seen in gaming. There are also moments that are incredibly shocking, causing me to yell out loud multiple times. Nothing and no one appears to be safe in this game and that is always a good thing.
Gameplay wise Episode 3 brings back some of the more puzzle-like elements that were notably missing from Episode 2. It also introduces a more action-oriented sequence that plays like an adventure game take on a third person shooter. It’s as basic a shooter as it gets but it works well for The Walking Dead.
There isn’t much else left to say about The Walking Dead that hasn’t been said in previous reviews. Episode 3 continues to tow the line by providing a great overall experience. If you’ve been on board for the first two episodes then you’ve probably already downloaded this new episode. If you haven’t jumped on The Walking Dead train yet, what on Earth are you waiting for? You’re missing one of the best experiences in gaming this year.
