I am upgrading my RAM later, any tips? 3 Weeks, 6 Days ago
|
|

I am expecting another gig of RAM for my PC to be coming in the mail within a few hours, and I want to know if there is anything to be careful about when I do this because I know that a friend of mine installed it wrong, and then had some trouble with his fan, and his rig overheating. I made sure that the RAM is almost the same type (Corsair is the brand I have, but I had to go with Kingston for this gig), and the specs should be exactly the same. Is there anything I should be worried about or is there good enough instructions in the box it will be coming with?

Is the other RAM stick 1 gig? Most motherboards don't allow mixing sizes. So long as you have the same size (say 1g PC3200) you should be okay. RAM only goes in one way and the system should detect it on boot up.
Static however is your enemy so it's best to open the system on a work bench on non-carpeted areas. If you don't have an anti-static wrist strap, put your hand on a cold water pipe to ground yourself before handling anything PC related.
Hope that helps. Good luck.

You definatly want to watch the pressure you're putting on it. The slots on my old computer sucked and I actually broke a 512 MB stick pushing too hard.

What is worse is that I blew the power supply on it. Now I have to go to the Geek Squad, and have them replace that, and then place the RAM in my PC.

How did you manage that? I have but only when I put a Radeon 9800 (When they were good) on a 250 watt power supply. It pittered out and died.

I touched somethings I shouldn't have, and I blew the power supply. I am going to the geek squad tomorrow so I should be fine.

No offense but I wouldn't trust the Geek Squad as far as i could throw a Best buy. I'd check the fuse in the power supply first.
And you should always have the computer unpluged when work inside.

It was unplugged until I tried to plug it back in to test a few times. The only reason I am going to trust the bestby guys is because I don't want to screw my PC up any further, and if thety mess up I can get them to replace the whole thing.

Kowarus I'd recommend going on newegg and getting a decent power supply for 50 bucks, and geek squad is a huge ripoff most of the times, some computer component parts are delicate but a good power supply is usually pretty solid. I say try to do it your self, unlike ram you have less of a chance of breaking anything because the connectors are pretty sturdy and it's not too hard to figure out what plug goes where.
Geek Squad is a colossal waste of money, the wanted to charge me 250 to fix a.dll boot up fix that I fixed myself after looking for and answer on the internet. Oh, and if you not sure about how to install components try youtube they have really good instructional videos on most of this stuff surprisingly.

The problem is that just before my PC blew up it was not starting with or without the RAM in place, and I have determined it to be a BIOS problem. The only explanations online for the BIOS problem involved stuff that I would have no idea how to do (I am a windows guy, and do not like dealing with hardware). I personally have had great service with BestBuy, and I know that if they don't think the PC is a problem they will just tell me what to do, and I can be on my merry way. Otherwise having my PC in the shop for a week is nothing like having it in transit for a month if I try to send it back to the manufacturer (NOT AN OPTION DESPITE WARANTY IN PLACE).

Do you have an ASUS motherboard? If you do, post which one it is, my father has been having a similar problem with his ASUS not starting up... we tried restoring his pc to XP SP2 by reinstalling XP, then we tried getting a complete new set of RAM and that helped for a little while, but it still has boot up problems, we fixed up the BIOS (we thought it may have been a BIOS problem as well), and still no luck so we are pretty sure its a problem with the motherboard itself.
Also, with regards to your PSU, I am not sure if it is still on sale but I got a 500w coolermaster psu at fry's for less than 30 dollars after rebate, you might want to check that out.

M2N-E SLI ASUS motherboard. Link me to the PSU because that will probably be cheaper than going to Bestbuy for one.
Also the beeping noise went in a pattern of long-short-short. Normally it has a long, and then halfway through the long beep is seems to drop a tone.
