Overstepping the boundaries? 5 Months, 1 Week ago
Another GTA thread. Woo...

Alright, I know earlier in the week, I adamantly stood up for all things GTA. It never really bothered me that much, all of the killing and what not. Well seems like they finally pushed it past my breaking point.

I'm sure most of you are probably there or past there by now, so I'm thinking it won't be a spoiler, least not a big one. Alright, the mission you take from Derrick McCreary while he's high on heroin, Death Tunnel I think it was called, started out ok.. kidnapping a prisoner to take him off and murder him so as to not attract attention to Derick. After you nab the guy he starts singing your praises and what not, thanking you and whoever got you to spring him out of jail, and hey I'm thinking why not? He's probably been in there a good long while. The mission ends when you get him to the cliffs, a small cutscene plays where he finds out that his nemesis Derrick busted him out, he's dumbfounded of course, and eventually horrified when Packie, Derrick's younger brother tells him he's about to die.
Up to this point I'm good, nothing is bothering me, no guilty conscious or anything. But when you pull the gun on him, and he starts begging for his life and telling you how he was set up.. I dunno.. I just wanted to let him go. I mean he's been in prison for so long, why not let him flee. But of course the game wouldn't allow that. You gotta shoot him. So I shoot him, and he falls over the cliffs into the water. At this point I just got this for lack of a better term crappy feeling in the pit of my stomach. That was just telling me, You know that was wrong.

Sorry for the long story guys.. I'm just curious as to whether this has happened to any of you guys? I've never had a story line from a game make me feel like s*** before.. But for some reason this one did..

Hmm, i think its good storytelling on the part of Rockstar. After all Niko Bellic came to Liberty City, to America, to get away from all the troubles and bad memories in his homeland. He doesnt want to be involved in this kind of stuff. He came to America to live the dream and forget his past. But thanks in large part to his cousin Roman(that's how i see it anyways), he is forced to do these terrible things that he came to Liberty City to escape. I think truly good games are the ones that pull these emotions out of the gamers playing them with fantastic storytelling and a cinematic approach, and to me anyways, it seems like that's what has happened here.

I agree with Dork. The good games are entertaining, but the great games make you feel something.

That mission I didn't have a problem with...It's when two charicters are friends and they both decide they are going to kill one another, then they both come to you at the same time and you have to make the choice as to who you should kill. I've done that twice. The first one...no problem. I knew who was to go. The second time...I was torn.

Thanks guys. RB.. I agree the mission with the two guys in the park... I knew who I wanted to take out.. but in the aftermath.. all you have to witness.. It was really depressing

I do have some pride in being Niko. I feel like I'm the guy they look to to get things done, and to do things they can't do themselves. I secretly like to think they are all afriad of me.

I do as well. It was finally nice to see Niko stand up to Ray before one of the missions. Felt like he'd been walked on enough.. lol. ET.. Yeah.. I just felt kind bad for him, just the deceiving got to me.

i agree with you guys, i had two instances like that in games- gta and splintercell double agent.

in gta, it was when i had to kill foustin, he was an @$$ but for some reason i felt terrible for betraying him even though he never really did anything wrong to niko or dimitry he was just crazy.

in splintercell it was worse,

i believe it was the mission right after escaping from jail, and you had to kill the completely innocent news chopper pilot, all gagged up and whimpering and squirming about for his life after that mission i turned off my xbox in disgust and didnt play for the rest of the night.

but, this does prove some good story telling as dorkfish and rburt mentioned. sorry for going slightly off topic

See Faustin didn't bother me. Neither did Vlad. Hell none of the others had bothered me at all. Just this one. But I guess like those guys said, It's just an amazing story touching the gamer I suppose.

oh, i was MORE than happy to kill vlad. hahaha
i dunno, the thing about Faustin was that i felt like i was some kind of loyal friend, he was always happy to see you and what not, i sure as hell didnt agree with how he treated his fam. but i dunno he was pretty cool. but i guess that just depends on the gamer.
