Okay I bought this game shorly after it came out and played it to completion. I wanted to wait to post anything because being in the middle of a new game causes a lot of people to lose objectivity.
AC gets a lot of praise for its 'parkour' elements. The problem I had is I never felt like 'I' was doing any of it. You hold down a button and move, the animation takes care of the rest. After the first climb around a city I was over it.
The fighting to me was nothing more than an evolution of quick time events. Instead of having the picture of the actual button come up you got your cues from the opponents body language. Yes its a step forward but its still a qte.
I'm not saying it was a bad game, just overrated. If you disagree more power to ya, I'm just voicing an opinion.

Was the game really overrated? Some reviews were high, some were low. The avg review on gamerankings was 81 - 82 depending on the system. Some gamers loved it, some hated it. Some loved the fight mechanic/story/game play, others thought it was repetitive, boring and broken. The game sold a ton of copies, but other games that are worse off sell a ton of games. Fiddy cents first game, and Scarface come to mind.
IMO assassins creed was a decent experience. It was far from perfect. The game at times flowed beautifully, and at times I was tossing my controller across the room. IMO the best thing about the game was the story and setting. Overall for the gameplay and fighting in the game it could have used about 6 months to a year of touch up to perfect it and get the bugs out. But in theory, most open world games have fighting mechanic issues, and smooth gameplay.
Personally I can't stand ubisoft, as they send out games that are broken, not play tested, and with serious bugs on a regular basis. I love there games, but I hate the quality control.

Well said. I'll give you setting but I've got to disagree on story. I found it to be a convoluted mess that more often than not pulled me out of the gameplay experience. It really felt to me like the backgound (present day) story was only there to tie in with future titles. They could have done away with the present day cutscenes completely and I would have had a better experience for it. You are correct though regarding your 'overrated' statement, capitalizing may have been a bit much, but hey, I got your attention

Well, some people love the tv show lost for the story, and IMO that is just as big of a convoluted mess as the assassins creed game. I understand what you are saying, I liked the story though. I know a lot of other gamers had similar reaction to yours and a lot loved it.
Yeah the present day was most likely used to tie in a sequel. It isn't like they could have done a sequel with the story only taken place during the crusades though. So I guess that is just the direction they decided to go with the story on.

i actually like the story on present day/future side. if you read through all the e-mails and checked out al the symbolism in eagle vision at th vey end of the game all of that is seriously entrenched in tin-foil hat wearing conspiracy theorists. i liked that stuff it's like watching unsolved mysteries when i was a kid.
gameplay yea it was simple and almost an entire game of quicktime events in a way i agree but i still had a lot of fun with it cause it was so easy to make altair look like a badass.
i only have 2 complaints with this game.
1. i think they laid a lot of good concepts but didn't expand enough in side missions. the very nature rinse recycle repeat was rather stale and hopefully the inevitable sequel will really expand on the good that they did with this game.
2. did we really need 420 or however many flags to collect. or at least attach something to them other than an achievement there was no benefit maybe even some backstory for the areas you coollected them in would have been cool.
overhyped yes, overrated not really, potential for a great franchise definitely.

I was short one stinkin templar for finding/killing all the hidden templars achievement . I also got screwed on the watching all cutscenes from different perspectives. Every cut scene I kept on hitting buttons, how I didn't get 80% amazes me.

I agree. Apart from the modern day tie-in, the story would have been rather generic. It was the modern day setting that foreshadowed the major event at the end and kept me interested in what was so unusual about what my ancestor had done.
As for the gameplay, I thought it was great. I can see that not everyone would enjoy the game, which as Furio noted is reflected in the mixed reviews. But I liked Indigo Prophecy as well, which was very open at being a game of quicktime events.
Given the early reviews and everything else that came out last fall/winter I was tempted not to pick up Assassin's Creed. It turned out to be one of the last of the big name titles from last year that I played. But I'm glad I didn't let the mixed reviews sway me from the purchase, because I loved the game.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

A little man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today.
I think he's from the CIA."

I wouldn't call it overrated so much as over hyped. It was forecast to be a giant killers and just wound up a little 'meh'. in a nutshell: It is beautiful to look at but you don't actually do much. I can't help but think it plays a little like a launch title, showcasing the graphics and storyline possibilities and presentation, whilst not giving you all that much to do.

I agree with Joe. I personally loved the game but I didn't think it really broke ground in much of anything but i still loved it. I don't think it was overrated at all like Halo 3, I think it was just over hyped.
