Just wondering if anyone picked this up and how it was?

I tried my girlfriends son copy and thought it was a solid title but the story wasn't for me. A little to EMO for me to get into. Game play, and control were well put together though.

You've already played the game enough to know the story isn't for you?

Gamespot actually praises the story, which is a surprise, since they praise as much as any other Scrooge out there.

How long do you need to know you don't like the story? As I said it was a solid game I didn't like the story so I choose not to play it. Just like I don't watch TV shows I dislike do you watch The hole season of a TV show before you make up your mind.

Apologies, you weren't giving a serious critical opinion. I understood that, but I usually spend more time getting to know about the story if the gameplay is decent...it usually just happens that way anyway, because I play the game longer.

So far I think this game is pretty cool, and it is very true that adjusting to the combat system is really hard to do. I like the style, though. I just wish I understood what was going on a little bit more, I feel like I am running around doing things and completely missing something. I don't know what, but I feel like there is something I'm not doing right.

By the way, I agree, the story is a little emo-cheese. I am only a few hours in but even at this point, I can agree that the main character is a little too angsty.

Hmm... how does it seem EMO? Do they try to cut themselves? Or try to depress everyone by their medicore life?

Yeah I looked at videos and pictures of the game and it seemed alittle chaotic, but chaotic isn't a bad thing to me. I dunno it has been under my radar for games for a long time and I just saw it about a 3 weeks ago and trying to follow it. It seems pretty interesting. Plus I am one of those that buys almost anything that has the square-enix title on it. Except a few titles like the FF Chronicles just turn me off completely.

The reason it is "emo" is because of Neku's demeanor, he is very...well, emo! He is angst-ridden and constantly negative, the story definitely has a hint of twisted in its strangeness...that about does it, it doesn't reek of "emo" like Fall Out Boy or Hot Topic stores, but it tries to be "edgy" in a sophomoric way at times.

I will say, the way he treats Shiki, the girl character, is hilarious. He is such a dick to her.

That doesn't bother me really though if it has some great gameplay elements and a decent story. I'll pick it up regardless if a few characters are a little emo lol. Its getting very high reviews, and usually reviews never catch my attention unless they are in the 8.5 and higher zone. Usually I just look at stuff that my interest me.

yea, the game has some very high reviews; although i'm still very hesitant to buy this. i just don't know what i have against this game, its like i want it but something about it is a big turn-off...its probably all the EMO-NESS.

Thats why I felt the story wasn't for me, even though the game is solid build.

When I first played this game, my opinion of the main character was the same as most in this thread. The typical Japanese emotional and slightly feminine male lead character has never really suited the general American demographic and a long line of JRPGs have proved that. However, the whole point of the story is that Neku (the main character) starts off as an obnoxious emo jerk and changes over the course of the game. That said if your idea of understandable, realistic and emotionally scripted characters are Marcus Pheonix, Master Chief or Ryu Hyabusa (see they are not all Japanese!)

His relationship with Shiki rapidly changes and by about 5-10 hours into the game Neku actually becomes quite likeable (or at the very least you can begin to feel a sense of sympathy for his situation). I for one am seriously digging the storyline and once the twists start twisting you will understand why. For once it is less totally illogical Japanese storyline insanity and something tangible and even *shock* provoked a twang of emotional response from me. I actually cared when some of the support characters were 'erased'.

Gameplay wise is pretty deep for a handheld RPG. I have played about 9-10 hours now and I still feel there is plenty of meat left in the surprisingly engaging plot. When you start introducing other partners you have to fight with, the gameplay mechanics flesh out even more, so I haven't gotten bored of the often manic slashing and tapping that is the battle mode.

This is one of the most complete and innovative games to come to the DS and a true example of a game that could only exist on that system. It is far from perfect but if you come at it from the right angle and get sucked in, you might wind up like me, playing it at home in favour of the Xbox or Wii!

A bit more than first impressions, but just my two cents!

Yeah I actually agree with you too. I finally got this myself despite the flame on Neku a few weeks ago and forgot to put my impression up. I have to agree with everything you said to the extent that I can't come up with something on my own at this point . The one thing I have to comment on is that exp/pp gathering is one of the best ways of leveling I have encountered in my opinion. I mean I get PP(Pin Points, for whoever hasn't played it) for just not playing/playing with DS calender , Mingle PP for just leaving it on over night or while my g/f is on her DS playing online, then you get it through fighting. Granted trying to get any of those three can be a pain when trying to evolve a pin(mostly the mingle) but it is usually worth it to upgrade your most used pins.

The gameplay has a massive amount of depth for a DS game, and once you get used to the games style and fighting you can sit there and play for hrs and forget that you have to continue on with the story. It is very addicting.

I recently traded in my copy, which I now realize was stupid because I have nothing to play and need something horribly.

This is seriously the reason I just bought my DS. Now to venture into other games...

Just picked it up over the weekend. Awesome game, highly reccomended to any DS owner.

Finally got the game a few days ago...on Amazon and Ebay I couldn't find it for under 60.00! Everywhere else it was on backorder, so I chose to wait. Very reminicent of Kingdom Hearts (my fave game of all time!) so I'm having a blast with this so far.
