I just watched He Was a Quiet Man last night. This is the case of a movie with a awesome premise that winds up TOTALLY squandered under the weight of amateurish themes and a sophomoric reliance on crummy CG and bad gimmicks to cover the filmmakers's lack of narrative craft. There were so many ways this movie could've been awesome and it just turns into a big bag of fail all around. When you get to a point into a movie and JUST KNOW the depths of cliche the director is willing to fall to a half hour before it happens, you've got a stinker.

Only worthwhile aspect of this movie is Christian Slater's best work in years if not ever.

The last movie I watched was Rambo: First Blood. I picked it up on blu-ray and loved it. I'd say a 9.6/10 for me.

I am going to watch The Hulk very soon, really hope this one is better than the Lee Ang one. That one I rate 6/10.

Just saw Superbad (I know!) and while it was funny (see "drawings" in credits), I didn't like it as much as everyone else on the planet. 3/5

Need to rent Rambo and go see the Hulk. Should have plenty of time now, since I'm on holiday!.

Last night I watched the new Futurama movie, The Beast with a Billion Backs.

If you like Futurama, you'll love this. Personally, I think it's better than Bender's Big Score. It felt more coherent and is less obviously structured for episodic viewing. I'd give it a 8/10.

The Incredible Hulk - 8.5/10 Much better than Ang Lee's 2003 film, some terrific action scenes. On the downside, Edward Norton was a little disappointing, and the CG was meh at best. Still, a very good comic movie, now I really can't wait for the Avengers film.

Get Smart - 8/10 Funny movie, great action scenes, Steve Carell was perfect for his role, and the story wasnt that bad either.

My nephew loaned me Cloverfield. I was skeptical about the way it was filmed, but I think it worked well. Overall it was better than I expected - I would say 4 out of 5.

Saw The Incredible Hulk today. I agree with the consensus here that it was a good movie, but not quite Iron Man. It definitely further's the ground work for The Avengers. I'm just hoping Marvel can keep the majority of the cast together and pull it off.

Mine was the new Rambo and I loved that movie I liked how he would kill when necessary without hesitation and I liekd that it wasn't incredibly long. So in all id give it a 8.5 overall a good movie.

I saw Hancock yesturday. The beginning, or up until he got called out of jail, was funny and enjoyable. Everything after that was uninteresting, the twist and ending, for me, were really bad. I like the concept, like the comedy, like the cursing, but it didnt feel like it was worth the money. Should've seen Wall-e 6/10 Rent it

The last flick that I watched on DVD was The Machine Girl (click for trailer. Warning: it's a gory trailer). I had been told that it was a gloriously gory throwback to Japanese gore and b-movie sensibilities. You know... like every other gore-fest out there claims to be. AICN praised it... but that's worth less and less these days. I was expecting an Ichi the Killer-lite experience, kind of an ironic, tongue-in-cheek post-Miike, post-Battle Royale Japanese blood bath, the kind of thing Tarantino did so well with Kill Bill, Vol 1.

Alas.

I think it was going for the "so bad it's good" crowd. However, the whole "so bad it's good" thing just doesn't work when you are being intentional about it. This makes Snakes on a Plane look like a masterpiece. The production values are ridiculously low; the gore is derivative and boring and looks like every other Tokyo extreme flick out there... but less exciting; the acting (which I know nobody really cares about in a film like this except me) is abysmal; and there is zero tension throughout the entire film. It's just lousy, obnoxious, mean-spirited and, worst of all, not fun. There are so many better films in this genre... Dead or Alive, Versus or, of course, Ichi The Killer come to mind. If you're into extreme Asian cinema, you'll probably end up seeing this... but really, it's just horrible.
