E3 2008: Microsoft says your themes are likely safe on the new dashboard. We hope. PDF Print E-mail
Written by Phil "SempraFi" Meza

thumb_dash1.jpg

This afternoon, I visited the Microsoft press lounge for what was supposed to be a 30-minute presentation on Fable II...and ended up being a full playtime session of their various titles that lasted over two hours. Good times. Halo Wars, Fable II, Banjo, Lips...I got lots of time with them all. But one of the more interesting things I sat in on was a demo of The New Xbox Experience, Microsoft's revamp of the 360 UI coming this Fall via a new firmware update.

We saw the screens and brief looks at the interface's sections during the press conference, but sitting 3 feet from a development kit running the system on a TV is something different. According to the MS rep, the system is currently going through a lot of testing and feedback sessions, so things may or may not change in the coming months. A question that we all asked, almost at the same time, was "What happens to our Themes that we've payed all those Space Bucks for?"

If you've seen the new UI, it looks like the only place that they could fit in is on the new, and drastically smaller "blade" interface that replaces the "Xbox Guide" popup, since it's basically a reduced represenatation of the current dashboard. Not so. We were passed a laptop that displayed o concept image of what the reps say is likely what will be in the final UI. See that up there? Your themes will now be more or less wallpapers faded into the background, with each "level" of the menu system (Community, Primetime, etc.) displaying a different image in the Theme selection of choice. Cool! As well, remember how on the PS3's XMB how you can view clips of  videos on little thumbnails? Something like that is in the works here, too. Oh, and for the record: Yes, the Avatars are very cool. Necessary? Maybe not, but they're cool.

Bungie is working on another Halo. Are you surprised? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Phil "SempraFi" Meza

 thumb_halo3_002.jpg

In case you had to think about that for a second...the correct answer was "no." Even though Bungie confirmed that their new project's announcement was canned by their publisher (a project which may or may not have been the following), Microsoft's Don Mattrick has come out and confirmed that one of the studio's new endeavors is indeed another official Halo title for the Xbox 360. Not Halo Wars. Not the Peter Jackson project. Halo 4? A new outing not starring Master Chief? No word just yet. What about the Superintendent?

As it turns out, what we heard through the grapevine after the fact was true...the new Halo was supposed to be present during the Microsoft press conference on Monday, but the company yanked it from the roster at the last minute for organizational reasons and time constraints. Wah wah. On the bright side...Microsoft and Bungie are planning to reveal the new title during "a dedicated event." PAX, maybe? Leipzig? Hmm...

Rumor (sort of): Dead Rising getting waggle-ified soon PDF Print E-mail
Written by Phil "SempraFi" Meza

Yet another Famitsu leak inside bit of info rumor, folks. Remember Dead Rising? The game that a HUGE majority of 360 owners bought their consoles for in the first place? Capcom may have let us down at their press conference by not mentioning anything about a new zombie adventure, but that doesn't actually mean there isn't a quasi-new title on the way.

The Japanese magazine's newest issue claims (and shows) that Capcom is currently working porting ( yes, porting, not making a "new" game) Dead Rising to the Wii. If you choked on that bit of news, I'll wait........good to go? Ok. Yeah, apparently some wiggle waggle is getting implemented into Frank West's deserted mall shopping spree. When? No idea. Good plan? Sure, the Wii prints money. Sold yet?

Yes, that really is Sony's oft-delyed Killzone 2 right there. The multiplayer portion. Bwah?? It looks that good...online? Yes, yes it does.

And after spending over an hour with the game today (oddly, the only kiosk on the E3 show floor was shoved in a corner. I had to hit up the PlayStation Lounge), I've got no doubt that graphics whores will be silenced when it comes to Killzone 2. Content and gameplay? TBD, but visuals are a go!

E3 2008: Konami announces expansion pack to MGS4 PDF Print E-mail

At Konami's E3 press conference tonight, possibly the biggest announcement revolved around their smash hit, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

Tomorrow, July 17, 2008, Konami will be releasing an expansion pack for the game, entitled the Gene Expansion Pack, via the PlayStation Network. The new content will feature new characters, new gameplay modes, and even a few extra surprises. VR missions, maybe?

Konami also mentioned their first ever Metal Gear Online tournament, taking place at Comic Con next week, followed by The World Tournament at the Tokyo Game Show in October.

We'll have to wait until tomorrow to find out exactly what the "surprises" are in the expansion pack. But given Hideo Kojima's track record, it will probably be a safe bet to assume the Gene Expansion Pack will be a winner.

E3 2008: Ubisoft's Far Cry 2 demo walkthrough PDF Print E-mail
Written by Larry "Bacchus" Marcum
Wednesday, 16 July 2008

One of the game's showcased at yesterday's Ubisoft press conference, Far Cry 2, is now online for all to see. The developer walkthrough has been recorded and put into a nice little video package for us.

You won't see too much here, to be honest. The main focus of the demo is to display the effect that time of day has on the gameplay.

Still, this thing looks pretty sweet. The demo has a "spontaneous" event occur, but we'll have to see exactly how random these things are when we get our hands on the retail game this Fall.

E3 2008: New gameplay footage from Bionic Commando PDF Print E-mail
Written by Larry "Bacchus" Marcum
Wednesday, 16 July 2008

We all know that Capcom has been working on two separate Bionic Commando titles. One, a remake of the classic NES title, is a little less interesting. The other, a brand new, next-gen title, definitely has the ability to raise our excitement level.

Up until today, I was sort of 50/50 on the title. We hadn't heard much about its development until this year's E3, but it seems it was worth the wait.

Today, Capcom was kind enough to give a gameplay demo to quite a few members of the press at the convention. And, not surprisingly, a gameplay video has been released for our viewing pleasure.

Before today? Not so convinced. After today? Do want!

E3 2008: MadWorld trailer hits the interwebz PDF Print E-mail
Written by Larry "Bacchus" Marcum
Wednesday, 16 July 2008

In an attempt to dispute the "cute and family-friendly" reputation of the Nintendo Wii, Sega has begun work on a new title, MadWorld. And today, a new "DeathWatch" trailer has been pushed out to the public.

If you haven't seen any info on MadWorld yet, the first thing you'll notice is its art style. Black and white... with a little bit of red thrown into the mix. According to the game's official site:

"MadWorld revolves around the themes of brutality and exhilaration. To give MadWorld the graphical edge to match its brutal theme, we tried removing all color from the world except for blood. As a result, we decided the best concept color way to convey blood, and thus brutality, was against this black and white backdrop."

Throw in a little bit of sly humor, and you've got the following trailer. Check this bad boy out. So far, it looks like it might actually be pretty fun. We'll be able to know for sure in Q1 of 2009, when the game is scheduled for a North American and European release.

Is there anything more amusing than crazy rabbits... err, rabbids?

After announcing their new title, Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party, at their Ubidays event, Ubisoft decided to roll out a new trailer for the game today. In the video, you'll get a taste of a few of the mini-games, as well as the use of the Wii Balance Board.

FYI, the "dad" in this trailer is fun to watch. Some of the facial expressions he makes... well, just take a look for yourself.

E3 2008: Ubisoft releases H.A.W.X. trailer PDF Print E-mail
Written by Larry "Bacchus" Marcum
Wednesday, 16 July 2008

Who would have thought that more than one flight combat game could survive on the market at the same time? Apparently, the answer to that question is, "Ubisoft."

Joining the never-ending Ace Combat series this September will be H.A.W.X. (High Altitude Warfare Experimental Squadron). And to raise the excitement surrounding the game just a bit, Ubisoft released a trailer earlier today.

This is, for the most part, all standard stuff. Troops in trouble, pilot takes off, pilot dodges missile, pilot destroys enemies of troops. It's the kind of trailer that just makes you want to go watch Top Gun

I miss Goose...

Breaking news from the E3 show floor!

Just a few minutes ago, Nintendo representatives have confirmed that their upcoming title, Animal Crossing: City Folk, will support a USB keyboard for use in-game.

The keyboard will be used to send messages to friends, send messages to the Wii forums, as well as writing letters at the in-game post office.

And best of all, it seems that practically any USB keyboard will be compatible with the game. That's right, you're not going to be handcuffed on this one, forced to purchase an item with Wii branding on it.

Animal Crossing: City Folk is scheduled for release this November.

Wednesday, 16 July 2008

Did you know that Motorstorm is the best-selling PlayStation 3 game of all time? Seriously! Better than Resistance, better than MGS4, and better than GTA IV! No, I didn't get my hands on grandma's medicinal marijuana.

Well, starting this Winter, we'll be able to get our hands on the sequel of this selling-like-hotcakes title, dubbed Motorstorm: Pacific Rift.

Featuring fully-destructible environments, a more refined handling system, and monster trucks (yeah, buddy!), this little bugger is looking more and more exciting by the day.

Today, we have a chance to take a peak at the new trailer for the game. And be sure to check out our hands-on preview from the E3 show floor.
