Skip the rumor mill, and file this one under ridiculously far-fetched for now. Word is going around that All Points Bulletin (the new "urban" MMO from Crackdown creators, Realtime Worlds), and the recently rumored-to-be-early-development GTA MMO might just have more in common than anyone thought.
According to Eurogamer, a "credible source" has told them that earlier this year when Realtime Worlds re-acquired the license to their MMO from then-publisher Webzen, it wasn't just so they could have creative freedom over the title. It was so they could tweak it, and "try and sell it to Rockstar as GTA Online." Wh...what? Realtime Worlds has, of course, denied that this is the case, offering up a statement that the reason they re-purchased the game's license back was so they could have "options":
One of which is to launch it and support it themselves, and the other
one is to look for another partner; someone else who may well be
interested and have the infrastructure [to support it].
Well doesn't that ring a bell? Rockstar Games could very well be that partner interested in a game that just so happens to look, and feel, nearly identical to their own creation; especially if they were "allegedly" headed down the MMO road with it anyway. Not to mention the fact that David Jones, CEO of Realtime Worlds, also helped to create the GTA franchise. Hmm... From the little we've seen of APB in action thus far, it's not looking too shabby. A nice mix between Crackdown's simplistic, comic-like visuals (perfect for a large-scale MMO, no?), and GTA IV gameplay. There's also that lofty sum of $50 million that was "invested" into the company just a few months ago. Ponder that one for a while...
