Some unfounded rumors have been making their way around the web over the past week claiming that Microsoft would be rolling out either the next, refined version of the Xbox 360, or a new console all together sometime next year. Once again, talk of a Blu-ray Disc-enabled, bigger hard drive and/or 65nm chip-equipped console refuses to die. Engadget spoke to Microsoft at the Spring Showcase event yesterday, and they, shockingly, got an actual response. Instead of the usual PR spiel, a representative told them:
While we don't normally comment on rumors like this, we can tell you that we have no plans to release a new console in 2009.
Could be the honest truth. Could be that wacky corporate denial. There are no "plans" to release any new hardware iterations, that doesn't mean plans won't present themselves sometime in the next 12 months. You decide.
