If you ever had the opportunity to play the original Bionic Commando on the NES in 1988, you know how painfully difficult the game can be. You probably could have fed everyone in the world if you had a nickel for every time you cursed Capcom’s name....

Beyond Good & Evil 2 in pre-production, Ubisoft has yet to say "go" PDF Print E-mail

Michel Ancel, creator of the highly praised fan favorite Beyond Good & Evil, recently opened up to French outlet JeuxVideo and said that yes, Beyond Good & Evil 2 is "real", and has been in pre-production stage for over a year. However, much to his dismay (and ours), good old publisher Ubisoft has yet to tell the 10-12 person development team to go on ahead and officially start full production. You know, make it a real game.

Doh! You had me there for a second, Ubisoft. There's time for Horsez, Rainbow Six 19, a Wii balance board-using Rayman spin-off and a host of other sequels that won't likely sell half of what BG&E 2 would. What's the deal? Get crackin'!

didn't the first BGE sell horrible? As good/great of a game many felt it was (imo good but highly overrated)if it doesn't get into a large amount of hands and make them some good money why would they bother with another one.

The first one is a cult hit with a very big following. It sold poorly because it wasn't marketed well, and it was released against some pretty heavy hitters.

I knew it was a cult hit that had a die hard fan base. There were other games that did ok at the same time that didn't get much of a marketing push. If they make another one, what makes you think that they will have a big marketing push this time. Like I said, it was good, but imo highly overrated by the cult following. When/if it ever does come out, I would think that it will have a bunch of heavy hitters to fend off. IMO I don't think the game was great enough to really ever hit the mainstream even with a good marketing campaign, as long as it hits in the holiday season.

Jay said:

Because now they DO have the fan base to start marketing to, and it's a fairly significant one to boot. On top of that, they'll be able to learn from their marketing mistakes with the first one and realize that putting this up against games like Splinter Cell, a hit title from the same publisher, is a stupid idea.

furio311 said:

it wasn't just splinter cell, they also failed compared to prince of persia...

IMO, even with a decent marketing push (which I don't think it will have) it won't fair much better then the first one sales wise.

I'm glad to see this. While I'm not a BGE apologist, I liked the game. Ubisoft released BGE on Steam this week. It seems to me that this is either early marketing or they may be looking to see how well it does on Steam to see if releasing the sequel would be a good risk for them.

Phil said:

It will fair better, even if the marketing is shit, because BG&E 2 - if greenlit - will be on both PS3 and 360. That alone guarantees it'll sell more than the original. Couple that with the fanbase it's achieved, and lessons learned like Jay said, Ubisoft won't screw this up...for fear of 'Splinter Cell'ing this franchise.

wasn't it on the ps2 (which was selling like a juggernaut) xbox and gamecube? The fanbase you all talk of, was small enough were ubisoft, (a sequal maker) has yet to greenlight another one. Would it be nice to see it sell well? Yes of course it would, but I really don't see that it being on the ps3/360 guarantees that it will sell better.(the ps2/gamecube and xbox didn't guarantee that it sold) And since it sold so poorly, I don't see how a tiny fanbase is really going to guarantee sucess either.
