Unbelievable. Seems Konami just can't handle those massive droves of Metal Gear fanboys waiting to don Solid Snake's camo for the last time. Not more than a month after the colossal failure that was the infamous Metal Gear Online beta signup and activation process, gamers looking to simply jump into the PS3 family by purchasing a Limited Edition SKU have been roadblocked. Last week, Konami confirmed that the PlayStation 3 bundle that includes a copy of the Limited Edition of Metal Gear Solid 4 and the special "gunmetal grey" 40GB console would (shockingly) only be sold through their official website. That should have sounded the alarms right away.
Pre-order day arrived yesterday, and swiftly crippled the network once again with the force of a thousand Cell processors. But it doesn't stop there, oh no. A mass refusal by the system (ie: dreaded "503 error") to fulfil almost every placed order wasn't enough, as a refundable (and thus absurdly ridiculous in the first place) $500 "insurance charge" is also being applied to folks' orders to their surprise, pushing the majority of final costs well over $1000. A Grand...for a paint job.
As of this morning, reports were trickling in that the bundle had effectively sold out. Konami has ceased pre-orders on the product due to this whole error, and have apparently axed the aforementioned insurance charge from future orders. It's stated on the website for consumers to check back later today, the 20th, for more information on when additional stock will be made available. I've got to say, though...really? Preparation is a good thing for something like this, you know. Come one, Konami. Get your s*** together, yo. Seriously. How are you going to handle June 12th?
[Update]: It seems as though Konami.com has re-opened the pre-order process for the bundle, but the whole thing's still broken, as numerous complaints are coming in that the errors received last night are returning. *sigh*
