A turn based, tactical RPG set in an alternate 1930s wartime reality. This sounds eerily familiar to another game which I recently reviewed here.  The small country of Gallia has been doing all it can to stay out of a world wide conflict between the...

I don't know about you, but I can't believe it's been 20 years since the first Madden game.  I didn't play that initial vision of games to come, as it would be another 4 years before getting trounced by my roommate in my freshman residence hall room.  Ahh, even to this...

Lost Odyssey video review - Updated PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jay "Skittles" Van Beveren
Wednesday, 05 March 2008

It may have taken a little while, but we hope you enjoy our video review of Lost Odyssey.  This six minute review captures some of the high points of Lost Odyssey, and why it might just be one of the best RPGs out this year.

If the picture's just a wee bit too small for you, you can find the larger version at this link

Our written review of the game, which goes into more detail on Lost Odyssey, is coming tomorrow.

Update: We found the error causing the small video on the site.  This has now been corrected, and the video is linked appropriately.  You can still find a slightly larger video at the link above.

For some reason the video is incredibly small for me.

Great first video review.

I think in the future you should show more gameplay instead of just cutscenes. A video review really doesn't show anything if there is no gameplay involved. But I understand that this was your first and you were testing the waters.

Keep it up!

I mean no offense, but when you review a game you should avoid spoiling a good chunk of the game for people. Once I got to the part where details about Gongora's plans came up in the review, along with the fact that he too is immortal I stopped watching because I didn't know what other spoilers were to come. I love the site and I appreciate you putting in the effort Jay, but think about it; if I recommended the game to you and before you even put it in I say "oh, by the way, this is going to happen and that Gongora guy, he does this and this..." you just might want to stop me.

I like that TAG is getting into video reviews, but I actually think this was a bit of a rocky start. It seems like a lot of time was devoted to simply describing the game rather than reviewing it. Other than that, I think it was a decent review. Keep it up.

To be fair guys, he did say this was mostly a precursor for the full length, written review coming tomorrow.

First time videos are never perfect.

Ok, half of the review is Jay telling the story. That's stupid. I want to hear your opinions about the game dude, not the story ok? It's fine to do a little overview, but comeon, seriously. I hope you do a better job next time.

Thank you for the feedback, both the supportive comments and the criticism being offered in a constructive manner. I genuinely appreciate both.

First of all, I found out why Blip was giving the site such a small copy of the video. I've updated that, so the copy you see in this post will now display at the appropriate size.

Second, for those of you mentioning that there's a lot of stuff the video doesn't cover, you're right. And that's intentional. Please understand that we have time constraints as far as the video length is concerned, so we can't cover every topic. While we'll try to make sure that future videos get into more of the 'meat' of the game, please remember that condensing an entire game into a 5 - 7 minute chunk is a daunting task, especially for a game like Lost Odyssey.

Third, for those of you that want to see more gameplay and less cinematic, we'll work on incorporating that into future videos.

Most importantly, I want to re-stress Phil's point from earlier. This is our very first video review. It's not going to be perfect. But over time, as we do more of these, the quality of our video reviews will improve. I most certainly appreciate all the constructive comments, and I'm listening to everyone offering suggestions in a helpful and friendly manner.

But I do want to ask for your patience. People rarely do things 100% right the first time out of the gate. So what you see here isn't representative of what you're going to see in a few weeks, or a few months. The only constant is change.

Great job Jay!!! That was excellent to watch, and I don't even care for turn based JRPG. It kept me interested for sure.

Wasn't Blue Dragon also under someone from Final Fantasy?

I've got to say though, I'm so tired of games where the protagonist loses their memory. I really hope that Mass Effect doesn't do that in order to get characters starting at level 1 again.

Thanks for the review even though jRPGs are not my cup of tea these days.

Yes, Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey are from the same studio (Mistwalker) and the same producer (Sakaguchi). The difference between the two is VERY striking.

Great video review but I will agree with the two main niggles.

More in game footage and less story line description.

Otherwise top stuff!
