Plz help Thinking about buying a labtop?

Postby BoSS J on Wed Feb 03, 2010 2:24 pm

I am about to go to Iraq and need something to do while I'm out there. So I decided to get a labtop for gaming, school, movies, and music I need to know what to get. I have been thinking about a Mac but just listened to the last episode of Uncle Gamer and got real curious. So can anybody tell me what kind should I get? And why not to get a Mac or why I should get a Mac?????

If you want to game you don't want a Mac. Few games come out for Mac. That's changing but only very slowly. Also, other application support for the Mac is much lighter than the PC. If you want to game I would recommend you get an Win 7 laptop with a dedicated (not integrated) graphics card. I would recommend at least 3GB or RAM, at least a 320GB HD (500GB preferred), and a Blu-Ray drive. If you need one quick I would recommend one of the last two on this list. If you can wait long enough I would do a customizable HP model similar to this but with a 7200 RPM hard drive.
But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. ;)

I'm a Mac fan myself, and my macbook is my current primary computer at home. For computing, movies, and music, it's perfect. I've grown to love the interface, and OSX Snow Leopard is extremely stable and comes loaded with a bunch of great features. Also, less viruses on Macs, if you're concerned about that, and they have amazing battery life. I'm a little less anti-Windows now that Windows 7 has come out, but I don't honestly see myself going back unless I build myself a devoted gaming rig.

Let us know what you choose!

What price range are you looking at? For $1500 I was able to get an MSI laptop (gt628) that is a very capable gaming machine. If you are not planning on playing things like Crysis you can get a good gaming laptop for as low as $1000.

If you're looking for an all-around PC for both work and gaming, the Alienware M11X might be worth looking into. Heard on IGN Game Scoop (or Three Red Lights) that it could run Mass Effect 2, and the price isn't too bad IMO ($800 for stock laptop, around $1500ish if you up the processor, RAM, etc). Might be worth a look.
