Scribblenauts 2 due by year's end PDF Print E-mail

500x_nintendopower

Seems one of the more hit and miss titles of 2009 is getting a sequel. The latest issue of Nintendo Power has announced that there will indeed be a Scribblenauts 2 released this year for the DS. The sequel promises to add 10,000 more words, 120 new and improved levels, the removal of the par system and improved controls (thank God!).

Now everyone knows that the original Scribblenauts had loads of potential. Many feel the controls got in the way of the world the game was attempting to create. If developer 5th Cell can get the controls down, then I am all aboard for another Scribblenauts. What do you guys think? Leave us your thoughts in the comments below.

New screens of Hotel Dusk sequel PDF Print E-mail

Kotaku has managed to get hold of some screenshots of Last Window: Midnight Promise, the upcoming sequel to Hotel Dusk: Room 215. Last Window once again deals with the personal life of series protagonist Kyle Hyde, who must now deal with the death of his father. Like the previous game, Last Window is played by holding the DS "book style" while emphasizing touch screen-based puzzles to progress the plot. No word on a U.S. release date but it seems Japan should see the finished product soon.

Hotel Dusk: Room 215 is one of my top five games on the DS. I am pumped to see that a sequel will indeed be coming out. Anybody else share the love for Hotel Dusk? Continue reading after the break for some new screens.

DSi LL off to good start in Japan PDF Print E-mail

DSiLL

I always thought gadgets were supposed to get smaller with redesigns but apparently Nintendo knew that this was a wrong assumption. Its bigger, better DSi LL launched in Japan on November 22nd and has seen some very impressive two-day sales.

According to Enterbrain figures (translated by Kotaku), the DSi LL has sold 103,524 units in its first two days. While not as strong as the DSi's launch (170,000), it crushed the launch of the PSP Go which sold 28,000 units in the same time period. Seems Japan was really interested in the new mammoth handheld's larger screen. So large in fact that it is 93% larger than the DS Lite (although with the same resolution).

Nintendo has confirmed that the DSi LL will be making its way to North America and Europe as the "DSi XL". Its scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2010. Check out some comparison pics after the break to get a feel of how massive this handheld really is.

Nintendo announced today the availability of two different DSi bundles for all you crazy Black Friday shoppers. The bundles will come in metallic blue or white with $20 of pre-installed games and applications.

"The special price and pre-installed titles make the bundles a huge value for the holidays."

These bundles will be available starting on November 27th in participating retailers nationwide. These probably won't be around for long. Continue reading after the break for the rundown of what is included.

It looks like we will be getting a Legend of Zelda game this year. In a recent press announcement, the house that Mario built announced that Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks will be released on December 7 for the Nintendo DS.

For those unfamiliar, Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks was announced at the 2009 Games Developer Conference and features the cell-shaded art style found in Phantom Hourglass and The Wind Waker.

22,802 possibilities await in Scribblenauts PDF Print E-mail

Scribblenauts

Joystiq is reporting that someone seems to have ripped the entire dictionary list used in next week's highly anticipated DS release Scribblenauts to the web. Though not officially confirmed, this list finishes up at the staggering total of 22,802 words. It seems almost anything can make an appearance in the game. Here are a few of the words that caught my eye as I scrolled through the entire list. And before you ask - yes, I was hungry when I wrote this.

  • Nirvana (I'm gonna assume "total happiness and contentment." We know how the other option worked out for Guitar Hero 5.)
  • chicken wings
  • onion rings
  • scientific calculator
  • shuriken
  • soldering iron
I'm not sure what kind of puzzles can be solved by entering in "onion rings," but I sure can't wait to find out. Scribblenauts will be available September 15th for the Nintendo DS. For the complete word list, click here.

Upload photos to Facebook with your DSi PDF Print E-mail

facebookds

Starting at 5 p.m. PST tonight, you'll be able to download the newest update for the Nintendo DSi, Facebook Photo Integration.

A Facebook icon will become integrated with the photo system already built into the DSi. You browse your pictures, and if you find one you want to upload, just tap said icon, and they'll be uploaded to your Facebook profile. Of course you'll need to have your DSi connected to a wifi network to do this.

Nintendo's VP of sales and marketing, Cammie Dunnaway, had this to add:

“Facebook and Nintendo DSi build on the trend of personalization that is so important to consumers. We’re giving people the tools to express themselves in creative new ways and show off the results to their friends and family on Facebook.”

If you're an avid DSi and Facebook user, this sounds like a match made in heaven. Remember, this free download is set to be available later today, so if you're anxious to get it now, you'll have to be patient.

Are you excited by Scribblenauts? I don't see why you wouldn't be, and even though it is being heavily hyped all indications are that it'll be lived up to. To that end, I'm sure many of us have already set down our pre-orders. If you have yet to do so, the pre-order bonus might just push you over the edge.

If you pre-order Scribblenauts from GameStop in the US, or EB Games in Canada (sorry Europe), you can adorn yourself with what has been dubbed as the "rooster hat". Yes, you too can dress up like the main character of the game and become a self-styled Scribblenaut yourself!

Scribblenauts will hit stores on September 15th, so get your pre-order in now, as supplies will surely be limited. Hit the jump for the back view of the hat!

Not sure if all the publishers got together and decided that this week would be "Release Date Announcement Week," but it sure seems that way. Next in the seemingly never-ending stream of release date announcements is Scribblenauts. The highly anticipated Nintendo DS puzzle game has been scheduled to be released on September 15, 2009.

Scribblenauts was developed by 5th Cell, creators of Drawn to Life and Locke's Quest.

Nintendo shows its roots with Game & Watch for DSi PDF Print E-mail

According to this article by Kotaku's Brian Ashcraft, Nintendo will be going incredibly old school with their next batch of Japanese DSiWare. Starting July 15th, one or two games from the classic Game & Watch series will be hitting the handheld.

For those unfamiliar with them, the Game & Watch games are a bunch of (mostly) simpler score-based games that involve a number of different situations, all of which can be highly destructive to your productivity. They also gave us Mr. Game & Watch, who I am sure everyone knows from the Smash Brothers series.

The article doesn't mention if the games will be coming to the states (I'd say it's likely), or whether or not they'll offer a significantly different experience from the Game & Watch DSi cart available at Club Nintendo. Either way, if you have a spare 200 points and don't need another clock or calculator, this is the way to go.

List of titles and Japanese release dates:
  • Ball July 15th
  • Flagman July 15th
  • Judge July 15th
  • Vermin July 15th
  • Chef July 29th
  • Helmet July 29th
  • Donkey Kong Jr. August
  • Manhole August
  • Mario's Cement Factory August
Quite an impressive list, even if it only scratches the surface. If this catches on, maybe we'll see some of the rarer games in the series like Super Mario Bros. or Zelda. If you just can't wait to play these games, you can always check out the previously mentioned Club Nintendo cart, or the Game Boy Gallery series.

Update: Nintendo announces new RPGs for the DS PDF Print E-mail

RPG fans hoping for some more titles on the DS will have plenty in store for them this coming year.

During Nintendo's E3 conference today, the Big N offered a glimpse at three new DS RPGs coming out in the next year. The first was Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days, the latest installment in the Disney-Square Enix mishmash. Gameplay video looked like typical Kingdom Hearts gameplay, which is a great thing, and will hopefully be just as good as its console brethren. The second title was Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story was also announced and is the newest tongue-in-cheek RPG staring Nintendo's franchise mascots. The third was Golden Sun DS, a very welcome return of the GBA series but now updated for DS.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days is schedule for release on September 22 2009, Mario & Luigi will be out this fall, and Golden Sun DS should make its debut in 2010. Stay tuned as we check out Nintendo's booth this week and find out what we can about these titles. Update: Hit the jump for E3 trailers for each of the RPGs.

Nintendo DS goes for serious mall presence PDF Print E-mail

Personal_Trainer_Walking

Mall-walking presence, that is.

Stepping out next week is the third in the Nintendo line of Personal Trainer software for the DS - Personal Trainer: Walking.  It's bundled with two "activity meters" (juiced up pedometers) that can store a week's worth of walking data and wirelessly send it to your DS.  The DS cartridge can store a rather intimidating five years' worth of walking data.  (This probably has nothing whatsoever to do with any future plans by Nintendo to redo their handheld console hardware, but five years is a really long time for a gamer.)  There's room on each cartridge for up to four users to store data, so it's definitely family-oriented.  But with two activity meters included, apparently they are encouraging walking in pairs.  There's even a "Life Rhythm" system that aims to put the user into a productive and healthy 24-cycle of sleep, rest and exercise.  (This may be a slight stumbling block for those of you in our All-Night game parties.)  And, for all us unlockables fanatics, the game will take your walking data and incorporate it into several cute features (like "Walk the World", which may give you estimates on whether you've really walked all the way to China.)

Personal Trainer: Cooking was the first in this line, and sold at a brisk pace.  Personal Trainer: Math came early this year, and the continuing Trainer line makes clear that this series intends to tear down the wall between game console and all-around digital assistant.  The list price of $50 makes the two activity meters about $15 apiece, which is a reasonable price on the pedometer market.  (Nintendo has remained silent about whether performance could be enhanced with the Motion Plus dongle.)

If you're the kind of gamer whose feet just can't stand still, walk on in to your local game store and pick up Personal Trainer: Walking on May 26.

Knights in the Nightmare DS Tutorial Demo on Wii Download PDF Print E-mail

Atlus continues to release innovative titles in the JRPG field, with new mechanisms that challenge the player to use the DS in new and fascinating ways.  Their upcoming tactical RPG Knights in the Nightmare is just their thing, with the player using the stylus to control a phantom Wisp that activates your party's attacks and abilities.  And if this sounds like great fresh fun for you, you'd better hurry your way to a Wii!

The turn-based RPG is not too far from the tactical fold in general appearance - you manage fighters in a small field of combat, defined by squares, and each fighter can move and attack.  But the player uses an on-screen ball of light called a Wisp (NOT in reference to the D&D monster that lures adventurers off swamp trails to drown in bogs).  It follows the tip of the stylus, and when it is held over a fighter, you activate and power up that fighter's attacks.  But life isn't all milk and honey for the Wisp - the enemies can put out a barrage of Wisp-harming particles that the player must dodge, or they will deplete the time meter you have for the round of combat.  Each fight has a fixed number of rounds - you run out of rounds, you lose.  The gameplay looks to be an interesting mix of slow tactical combat with environmental and equipment interactions, and a fast dodge-em game of keeping your Wisp from getting the snot beat out of him by the static of the spirit realm.

The tutorial for the game (where you run through several lessons about how the game will work, but don't actually play a whole fight scene) is available for a limited time on the Wii's DS Download service.  If the tutorial demo looks like another Atlus winner, just be a little patient - the game is on store shelves in just a few weeks, on June 2nd.

5th Cell draws on Warner Bros. to publish Scribblenauts PDF Print E-mail

Developer 5th Cell has released a few notable games for the Nintendo DS in the past. They created Drawn to Life, which while very ambitious, was by most accounts, just ok. Then they released Lock's Quest, which introduced me to Tower Defense. I'll defend that games honor with my life.  Their next game is even more ambitious than Drawn to Life, and I am very excited to see how it turns out.

In Scribblenauts, you take your character, Maxwell, through a series of levels to acquire something called a starite. The real meat of the game is solving the puzzles you come across in said levels. To do these puzzles, you have to figure out what object might solve it. It then gets drawn, or scribbled on the screen. The beauty of this mechanic is that you can use practically anything you can think of, and the game will draw it. If they can pull this off, the game could have a lot of replay value, trying to solve puzzles with off the wal objects.

Scribblenauts is due for a Fall 2009 release, and will be published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Full press details after the jump.

It still prints money: Nintendo DSi sells 435,000 units in first week of U.S. launch PDF Print E-mail

As if there were any doubt to the popularity of Nintendo's hardware, Edge is reporting that the Nintendo DSi sold over 435,000 units in its first week on retail shelves in the United States.

That's no small task for a new portable, especially considering that its predecessor is still selling incredibly well across the world.  But where it does become surprising is in the comparison between it and the DS Lite.  The older DS Lite platform sold a mere 226,300 units during its own first week of launch, which translates to almost twice as many sales in the DSi launch.

The Nintendo DSi is proving to be an unstoppable force, with reports that the new portable is now the fourth-fastest selling piece of gaming hardware in the history of the United Kingdom.  At the rate Nintendo profits off of this, they may soon need to buy several small islands in the Pacific just to hold all the money they're printing.

Nintendo announces Zelda: Spirit Tracks, DS game coming in 2009 (Updated with video!) PDF Print E-mail

It's not QUITE the megaton announcement you might have been hoping for, but it's close.

Satoru Iwata's keynote at GDC today also unveiled a brand new Zelda title.  The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks is due out for the Nintendo DS in 2009, and the gameplay shown at the event today was brief.  The glimpses Nintendo offered showed off an engine very similar to Phantom Hourglass, and while combat and exploration are featured in the game, it also includes... trains.

Yes, that's right.  We said trains.  Link was shown driving a speeding train, with a cannon mounted to the front of the locomotive.  This means Link has moved from Horse, to Boat, to Train in his quest to find the ultimate mode of transportation, so we're just going to go ahead and lay odds that whatever Link game comes around in 2013, the trusty Hero of legend will be flying a jet.  We've called it here first!

Update:  Joystiq managed to nab a copy of the initial trailer for the game, which we've posted below.  Wii owners can find a copy of this on the Nintendo Channel.
