Today Runic Games announced that are currently working on a sequel to the 2009 hit Torchlight. In case you have never heard of it before, Torchlight was a dungeon crawler in the vein of games like Diablo. It was released on PC and Mac for only $20. It's low price and addictive gameplay led to a high critical reception. The main criticism of the game was it's lack of multiplayer, something that Runic Games is looking to fix in this latest edition.
"Torchlight II answers the overwhelming call of our community with an expansive co-op multiplayer experience. With all new character classes, an expansive overworld, new quests, monsters, and lots of new dungeons, Torchlight II finally lets you play with your friends in the world of Torchlight. Consistent with our pledge to provide unmatched value, Torchlight II will be sold at a low price point, and include a free matchmaking service for peer-to-peer multiplayer experience. Expect Torchlight II to ship in the spring of 2011."
The game will debut at Gamescom in Germany at the end of August and also will show in Seattle at PAX Prime in September. The press release stated that it will release as a digital download first sometime next Spring. |

Well it turns out PC gaming is not dead. All you need to sell some PC games is a quality exclusive from a quality publisher. Blizzard has announced that Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty sold 1 million copies worldwide on launch day, with that number growing to 1.5 million in the first 48 hours. Roughly 620k of those were in the U.S.
"We launched StarCraft II in 11 different languages and on 5 different continents because we wanted to make sure as many players as possible were able to log on and play on day one," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We're pleased that so many people around the world have already picked up a copy of the game, and we look forward to welcoming even more players to Battle.net in the weeks and months ahead."
If these numbers from Blizzard are correct, this makes Starcraft II the fastest selling strategy game of all-time and the best-selling PC game of 2010; all within 24 hours. If that pace held up at all, the first week numbers could be monstrous. It will be interesting to see where Starcraft II ends up when the July NPD report is released later this month. |

Valve has announced that Alien Swarm has been rebuilt for the Source Engine and will be releasing tomorrow for FREE on Steam. The game is a class based, top-down shooter that supports up to four player co-op. You progress through levels by clearing wave after wave of alien creatures with an arsenal of 40 weapons.
Alien Swarm comes from the team that has been working on the Left 4 Dead series and Portal 2. They were hired by Valve after creating the mod from UT2004. Valve will also be releasing the full SDK for the game when it goes live tomorrow.
So, let's review. This game has four player co-op, 40 weapons and doesn't cost you a dime. Looks like I know what I'll be playing all next week (besides Limbo). Be sure to leave a comment and let us what you think of Alien Swarm in the comments below. |

Team Fortress 2 is now available for the Mac via Steam. Like all Valve releases, the game features Steamplay which allows you to play on both a PC and Mac with one purchase of the game. In addition, Team Fortress 2 features cross-platform play so Mac gamers can play against or with PC gamers.
Those who purchase the game over Mac get a free set of earbuds for their playable character. If you purchase the game this weekend, it will be 50% off its regular price (bringing it down to $9.99 for both PC and Mac).

The news of Portal being free until May 24th via Steam has sent ripples throughout the worldwide web.
But just in case you are not one of the millions of gamers who downloaded Portal yesterday, The Aperture Science Enrichment Center has a motivational recruitment video they would like to share with you.

Valve, has announced that Steam is available now on the Mac and as an added bonus, gamers who download Steam between now and May 24th, 2010 will also receive a free copy of Valve's game of the year award-winning Portal.
"The Mac is a great platform for developers," said Gabe Newell, president of Valve. "And it's also great that we now have the ability to connect with Mac gamers via Steam. This is the beginning of a groundswell of games coming out for and fully utilizing the openness and power of the Mac."
If you have not had a chance to play Portal, I think getting it for free is as good of an incentive as any. If you are a PC or a Mac owner why are you still reading this? You should be downloading Steam and grabbing your free copy of Portal! |

Valve has announced that Steam will officially be coming to the Macintosh (Mac) platform on Wednesday May 12th, 2010.
The first collection of Mac titles will demonstrate "Steam Play," which allows customers to purchase a game once and play it on all Steam supported platforms. Gamers who have previously purchased games on Steam will find them available in their account on the Mac as they are released.
Portal, in addition to supporting Steam Play, will be the first of Valve's Source engine based games available on the Mac. Native OS/X support for the Source engine is also available immediately to licensees for use in their games.
Among the initial titles available on Wednesday will be Runic Games' critically acclaimed Torchlight. "We're very excited to be bringing Torchlight to the Mac," said Max Schaefer, co-founder of Runic Games. "Having Steam for the Mac solves so many problems for us as a developer. We look forward to our future games coming out on the Mac as well."
In addition to bringing the online functionality of Steam to the Mac, Valve will also make its Steamworks suite of publishing and development tools available on the Mac platform. These include product key authentication, copy protection, auto-updating, social networking, matchmaking, anti-cheat technology, and more. The features and services available in Steamworks are offered free of charge and may be used for both electronic and tangible versions of games.
As a PC gamer I've been a huge fan of what Valve has done with their service and now with Steam on the Mac, the rumors of it coming to Linux......might hold a little "steam" (ok that was terrible).
Are you a Mac owner? Does this announcement make the Mac a viable gaming platform? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think!

Valve announced today it will bring Steam, Valve's gaming service, and Source, Valve's gaming engine, to the Mac. Steam and Valve's library of games including Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half-Life series will be available in April. Portal 2 will be Valve's first simultaneous release for both Windows and Mac.
"Our Steam partners, who are delivering over a thousand games to 25 million Steam clients, are very excited about adding support for the Mac," said Jason Holtman, Director of Business Development at Valve. "Steamworks for the Mac supports all of the Steamworks APIs, and we have added a new feature, called Steam Play, which allows customers who purchase the product for the Mac or Windows to play on the other platform free of charge. For example, Steam Play, in combination with the Steam Cloud, allows a gamer playing on their work PC to go home and pick up playing the same game at the same point on their home Mac. We expect most developers and publishers to take advantage of Steam Play."
"We looked at a variety of methods to get our games onto the Mac and in the end decided to go with native versions rather than emulation," said John Cook, Director of Steam Development. "The inclusion of WebKit into Steam, and of OpenGL into Source gives us a lot of flexibility in how we move these technologies forward. We are treating the Mac as a tier-1 platform so all of our future games will release simultaneously on Windows, Mac, and the Xbox 360. Updates for the Mac will be available simultaneously with the Windows updates. Furthermore, Mac and Windows players will be part of the same multiplayer universe, sharing servers, lobbies, and so forth. We fully support a heterogeneous mix of servers and clients. The first Mac Steam client will be the new generation currently in beta testing on Windows."
This is great, great news for Mac users. Any Mac users excited about this news? Let us know your thoughts in the comments. |

Valve has announced a new version of its Steam client. It has been designed to accommodate the rapid growth seen from the PC digital store/playground in the last year. This new version is already available via an opt-in beta to all Steam users.
"We made hundreds of changes to the Steam client as a result of customer feedback on the interface, performance, and functionality," said John Cook, Director of Steam Development at Valve. "For example, we swapped out the Internet Explorer rendering engine with WebKit, which gives us a bunch of size, stability and performance benefits. This release of Steam leaves us well prepared for another year of strong growth."
Some new features of the updated client include the ability for gamers to now be able to see which games their friends have purchased directly within the Steam storefront, news outlets now have the ability to reach the Steam community through the new client's news aggregator functionality and new methods of library management have been created.
To participate in the beta, existing client users can select "UI Update" under Beta Participation in the Settings menu. If you don't have the client installed yet, then you can click here to get your hands on it. For a complete rundown of the new features, continue after the break.

As a huge fan of adventure games, I have a bit of a soft spot in my heart for Telltale games. Sure, their games are, on a basic level, the same thing with every game released, but they do a great job of capturing that old-school point-and-click feel. There’s just something unbelievably satisfying about each of their games.
So, it should come as no surprise when I received an email just moments ago telling me that Sam and Max Season 1 was on sale for the low, low price of $4.95. Obviously this is huge news, but what might be even bigger news is the fact that this sale seems to be a tease for an all new season of Sam and Max, probably releasing this year.
With Tales of Monkey Island out of their way, it seems that Telltale can go back to (arguably) what made them so popular.
The sale can be found at http://www.telltalegames.com/samandmax2010

Love it or hate it, Bioshock is getting a sequel. Now comes the question if you're going to buy it. If you're still on the fence, then maybe you should check out the pre-order incentives for purchasing Bioshock 2 on Steam.
Steam is offering a couple different incentives. First up, anyone who pre-orders Bioshock 2 will get a 10% discount off the regular price of $49.99, bringing the total down to $44.99. You will also be given a free copy of the original Bioshock for you to keep or gift to that friend who never got to experience Rapture in the first place. If you're the type who is looking forward to the inclusion of multiplayer to the franchise, then maybe you should consider picking up the Bioshock 2 four-pack. This will be available for $134.97 with four free copies of the original also included.
Not a bad deal at all. Now all we can do is wait to see if this sequel can live up to the original. One thing is for sure; it has a huge pair of shoes to fill.
Bioshock 2 is scheduled for release on February 9th for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. |

Sorry guys and gals. Seems like it's going to be a while before you can get your MMO on in the Star Wars universe (Star Wars Galaxies didn't count). Bioware's Sean Dahlberg confirmed a Spring 2011 release window by a message posted this morning on the official Star Wars: The Old Republic forum boards.
"While we have not announced a specific date, we can confirm that we are targeting a spring 2011 release for Star Wars: The Old Republic. We've got a lot of exciting updates and reveals planned throughout 2010, including the first-ever hands-on testing for the game. It's not too late to sign up to be a game tester, so go to http://swtor.com/tester and sign up today. We can't wait to share more about the game with you as we progress through the year, so make sure you stay tuned to the official website for details."
A Spring release window usually means anytime before April. Seems like it could still be over a year before the much anticipated MMO makes it way onto that PC you bought specifically to play it. Now the betting can start on which game will come out first; Starcraft II or The Old Republic. I'm joking of course. Everyone knows Starcraft II is never coming out. |
