Remember-When-higher-res

Parris and Jay vs. The World

Prepare yourself for a battle royale.  Remember When is back with a new podcast, and this time, it's a battle of opinions!

We sit down this week for a quick episode, as we look back on our respective experiences with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.  Jay loved it passionately, Parris hated it to the point of nearly walking out.  With two diametrically opposed opinions, it's going to be a fun discussion.

Jay talks about his experiences with the movie, why he was pleased he DIDN'T read the comics ahead of time, and how he appreciates the love letter effect in the film.  Parris explains The Wife Effect, his feelings on why the romantic storyline deflated the overall film, and why Michael Cera might not have been the best choice for the role.

Two people enter the ring.  Where will it end?  Listen in and find out.

Then we wrap up the show with some talk about True Blood, Mad Men, why AMC is one of the greatest cable networks available, and our hopes and fears for the Fall TV season.  Believe it or not, we even manage to avoid spoilers in this section as well!

Remember-When-higher-res

You've been living in a dream world

Put on your pajamas and grab a cup of warm milk, because Episode 37 of Remember When is about to take you into the world of dreams.

We kick off our show with our latest "Great Movie Jay Has Never Seen", discussing the 1980's camp film "Dreamscape".  It's been a quarter of a century since the movie was released in theaters, and Dennis Quaid's hair has certainly improved since then.  But whether or not Jay's going to be able to appreciate this piece of nostalgia after all this time is questionable.  Listen in as he talks about the bad decision he made with the movie, as well as why he's not kicking himself over it.

Then we dive into the Dream Within A Dream, talking about Christopher Nolan's latest cinematic release, "Inception".  Written and directed from the muse behind The Dark Knight and Memento, this film has critics raving and audiences walking out of their theaters in wonder.  We sit and offer our opinions on the film, offer our opinion on the ending (and why its various interpretations help the film achieve its brilliance), and rave about the newfound appreciation we have for Tom Hardy.  We also talk about what we think was lacking in the film, and how a second viewing should be mandatory for anyone seeing it.

Finally, we wrap up the show with some talk about our TV viewing habits of late, our thoughts on True Blood... and could a hulking be in the mix?

Remember-When-higher-resCan't stop the signal

Remember When is back, and shinier than ever!

In our latest episode, we talk about Joss Whedon's Firefly and the feature film follow-up, Serenity.  A cult phenomenon that lasted a mere 14 episodes (3 of which weren't aired in the original run), this show holds a special place in the hearts of Jay and Parris.

We kick off by discussing how the two of us were introduced to this legendary series, and talk about how a simple TV show turned us from enthusiastic fans into Browncoats (and what it means to be a Browncoat).  And after a fresh viewing of the entire TV run, we take a look at which episodes are our favorite, which ones will end up crumbling over time, and remark at how extraordinary it is that so many of the episodes hold up over time.  We even give you our selections for favorite and least favorite episodes.

Then we jump into the Serenity feature film.  Both of us followed this piece of cinema joy as it progressed through creation, seeing it several times in pre-release fashion before it even hit the mass market.  You won't believe how many times Jay saw the movie in total!   Serenity was a moment of beauty for both Parris and Jay, and we talk about some of our favorite scenes, pieces of dialog that tickled us, and what makes this such a spectacle to behold.

And hey, even in our Firefly-centric episode, we have a few tangents.  Fortunately though, we saved those until the end, so if you're not a fan of True Blood, you can skip right past it.

We close our show with a BIG BIG ANNOUNCEMENT that will be the first big step for Remember When's future.  This is something you won't want to miss.

Remember-When-higher-resYou are a toy!

Less than a week after the release of our Honda Hybrid Confessions, we're back with another episode of Remember When!

In this Special Edition release, we're talking exclusively about Toy Story 3.  Jay and Parris had a chance to check out Pixar's latest release during its opening weekend spectacle, and now that we've had a chance to process it, we sit down and discuss our reactions to the movie, what went right, and what could have been improved.

Parris talks about how the saga of movies has touched his life over the past 15 years, Jay looks at the movie from a newer perspective, and we look back fondly on the series that's brought us so many laughs, gasps, and tears.

This is a spoiler-heavy podcast, so we encourage you to see the movie in theaters before listening to this episode.  But trust us:  Bring kleenex for the last few minutes of Toy Story 3.  You'll need them.

In the last few minutes, we pit Alien versus Aliens, talk about what you can expect from the upcoming Firefly, and give you a hint about our Big Secret Plan for Remember When.

Remember-When-higher-resOh, Sookie!

Remember When is proud to bring you the first edition of our Honda Hybrid Confessions.  Made famous on the UncleGamer Radio show back in 2008, we're continuing our annual trend by moving Remember When to the official Live show of the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

As we zip through the Los Angeles freeway system, we talk about our initial reactions to "Bad Blood", the Season 3 opener for True Blood.  The return of Sookie, Team Bill, Team Eric, LaFayette, and Tara has been something we've both been eagerly anticipating, and we talk about what worked in the episode, what fell flat, where the show missed an opportunity, and how much fun we had.

Then we tangent off as Jay confesses to Parris about a deep, dark, dirty secret from his Ireland trip, and Parris pats himself on the back for another job well done.

We wrap up the show with a mini-homage to our old UncleGamer days as we talk briefly about video games and what we saw during the first day of press conferences at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, what we're looking forward to, and the things we're most excited about as we prepare to set foot in the convention halls of this year's E3.

This episode is presented in its raw and uncut format, recorded on-the-fly as we're sitting in a car together, giving you a chance to listen in on us during one of our normal conversations without any editing or adjustments to the recording.  As a result, you may notice a little more naughty language than usual, but we do our best to put it to good effect.  Mostly.  ;)

Remember-When-higher-resFarewell to LOST

After six years of living together, LOST moved into the afterlife this past weekend.  And with the show's closure, we're proud to give you our Farewell to LOST.

We take a look back at the show's final 2 and a half hours, looking at the finale episode with a fresh viewpoint, clear heart, and an open mind.   Can a show like LOST be wrapped up in a 2 hour story?  Will we find the closure we wanted or needed?  And most importantly, was it worth it?  We talk about what we loved with the finale and what we didn't enjoy.

Then we go back in time, looking at the course of the show's history.  We talk about why LOST was important when it started, how significant it was in TV history, and what it meant for the landscape of television programming over the next few years.  We also talk about some of our favorite scenes, our most missed characters, and why Nikki and Paulo are still better off dead, even from a Sideways perspective.

Lastly, we give you a look at the upcoming Remember When schedule.  Even if you're not a LOST fan and you hate when we talk about it, you don't want to miss our next two show topics.  At least one of them will be epic.

Remember-When-higher-resRevenge of the Slater

As the 80's saying goes, Fair is Fair. In light of this, we're happy to bring you another episode of Remember When.

This week, our featured discussion is Heathers.  Chosen by our Facebook fans in a poll this week, Heather is the latest in Great Movies That Jay Has Never Seen, but it's also brand new to Parris as well!  We sit down and talk about the general reception of the movie, what we think of Christian Slater in one of his earliest performances, and talk about the mix of dark comedy and over the top violence.  Jay waxes philosophically about the parallels between the movie and The Catcher in the Rye, Parris feels let down by some elements of the movie, and the ghost of Christian Slater's 80's hairdo comes back from the dead to strike at the podcast.  We also tangent into 80's High School Movies in general, and how Heathers compares and contrasts against some of the greats, like Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Breakfast Club.

Then we jump into the latest news in TV cancellations, talking about FlashForward and Heroes.  Both programs were axed by their respective networks this week, and we talk about why we're OK with these decisions, what we think about the peril of investing in a mediocre show for too long, and how some of these decisions may affect our long term viewing habits.

We also have a few things to say about LOST, with a couple of minor spoilers... but you'll have to wait until the end of the show for the surprise.

Remember-When-higher-resThat TV Show on ABC

After a two month hiatus to focus on bringing a new life into the world, Remember When is proud to be back on your iPods, Zunes, and computers!

We kick off the show by continuing our Scorsese edition of Great Movies Jay Has Never Seen.  Released in 1995 and featuring an all-star cast, Parris previously stated that he expected Jay to like Casino, but not as much as he loved Goodfellas.  Will the prognostications of Parris prove poignant, or will Jay dislike this film?  We sit and talk about the joys of Scorsese's direction, the writing pace, and the stellar performance of Sharon Stone.

Then we kick into higher gear as we talk about the lead-in to the 2010 Summer movie season, Iron Man 2.  Robert Downey Jr. is back, but is his red suit still firing on all thrusters?  Did the sequel rise above the quality of the original for Jay and Parris, or was this just a so-so offering that could have been better?   And most importantly, how awesome is Scarlett Johansson in tight clothes?   We give you a spoiler-heavy look at Iron Man 2, covering what we liked, what we didn't like, and more.

Finally, we jump into our continuing discussion on LOST.  As ABC's hit show draws closer to its finish line, we talk about our increased disappointment over events in the show, the diminished impact of the show's writing, and what we think could have been improved.  We also talk about our theories for the show's ending, what we would have liked to see happen, and theorize on what contributed to the collapse of this show's universe.

Remember-When-higher-resGo get your shinebox

No, your eyes aren't deceiving you.  This really IS a brand new episode of the Remember When show, and our third consecutive show in as many weeks!

It's a Gangster's Paradise in Episode 30, as we pull double duty in this week's segment of "Great Movies Jay Has Never Seen".  Our first feature film is Johnny Dangerously, the 1984 gangster movie spoof starring Michael Keaton and Joe Piscopo.  Written by the same scribe that brought us Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Look Who's Talking, and Night at the Roxbury, Johnny Dangerously is a farging awesome comedy in Parris' mind.  But will Jay find an appreciation for a comedy that's over a quarter of a century old?

Then we dive into our second film of the week, Goodfellas.  Recognized by the AFI as one of the greatest movies of all time, Jay braces himself for a 2 hour journey into one of his least favorite genres of film while Parris braces himself for Jay's feedback on the movie.

We also take a look back at this past week's episode of LOST.  "Lighthouse" deals with the journey of two characters as they race to save the island, but that's the only real fast-paced action we see in this week's episode.  Parris compares the show's sixth season to the Sopranos finale, we talk about our misgivings with the Sideways Universe, and discuss our most feared potential ending for the show.

We also talk a bit about Ricky Gervais' comedy brilliance, and Parris needs the paramedics after Jay surprises him with some unexpected news.

A huge thanks to all the people that have joined our Facebook group over the past week!  If you haven't joined us yet, check us out at this link.  You can keep up to date on the latest happenings with the podcast, chat with fellow listeners, and catch our thoughts on movies and TV shows in between podcast releases.  You can also follow us on Twitter.

Remember-When-higher-resDigging up a frozen alien is a bad idea

Two episodes in one week?  No, you're not hallucinating.  After a mere seven days since our last release, we're proud to bring you Episode 29 of Remember When!

We kick off the show with the latest in Great Movies Jay Has Never Seen.  John Carpenter's "The Thing" is a cult classic, and one of the best performances that Kurt Russell has ever turned in over the course of his career.   But between the blood and guts and the Wilford Brimley appearance, will Jay be able to find his moment of sci-fi / horror zen?

Then we move into current events with a recap of this week's episode of LOST.  As the final season continues with "What Kate Does", we lament what this episode didn't do, talk about where our frustrations lie, and continue to offer our predictions for how the series will end.

We even have a full 20 minute segment of tangents at the end.  What good would our show be without them?

Remember When is now on Facebook!  Be sure and follow us at our official Facebook page to get the latest information on the show.  Facebook fans get a first look at what our show topics are, and will also receive information on when our live shows are recording, links to participate during the show recording, and get other cool stuff by participating.  Be sure and stop by!  You can also follow us on Twitter.

Remember-When-higher-resHey Slick, Get Lost!

It's Super Bowl Sunday, and regardless of who you're rooting for, we can all agree that a new episode of Remember When is just what the Doctor ordered!  So kick off your day with Episode 28, and enjoy a fresh episode of movie geek goodness!

Our show starts off with a look back at a classic adventure movie from the 80's, The Goonies.  Starring Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, and Corey Feldman, this classic piece of cinema from Richard Donner is our first discussion.  We talk about what we loved about the movie when we were kids, how well the movie's aged over time, and whether or not it's still relevant in today's society.

Then we jump into Heat.  This bank heist drama from Michael Mann is the latest entry in Great Movies Jay Has Never Seen.  Not so much a movie as a long-term cinematic commitment, Heat features an all star ensemble cast, an incredible shoot out sequence, and Val Kilmer with a mullet.  But with a three hour run time, Jay's willingness to invest is put to the test, and after the first hour, his brain shuts off.

Finally, we discuss the long-awaited, greatly anticipated return of LOST.  The season premiere whetted our appetites for more Island goodness, and we talk about temporal mechanics, alternate dimensions, and parallel coincidences.   Oh, and butt-nekkid Juliet, as well.

Our show is now on Twitter! Be sure and follow RWPodcast for the latest information on the show, including details on our live recordings where you can interact and participate with us while we capture the show.
